The design and construction of a new primary school and arts college at the site of St John Bosco Arts college and Our Lady & St. Swithinís Primary School in the Croxteth area of Liverpool.
The structural brief for the building from LCC required a 55m clear span to be formed in the main frame to allow the internal school structure to be removed if a change of building use is ever required. The clear span has been achieved by the use of hot rolled steelwork girder truss with a central ridge formed in the top chord.
The four stair cores have been used to provide stability to the building and would remain within the stripped out shell construction. Portal frames with compound column sections have been designed and detailed to each external corner to avoid the requirement for perimeter vertical bracing.
Intermediate floors are formed by the use of proprietary precast hollow-core planks. The foundations solution consists of traditional concrete pad bases.
